A few weeks ago, was a week unlike any other. Perhaps I was just more receptive, but each day seemed to deliver its own small wonder, starting with a friend's simple note.
“Wishing you a great start to the week! I know you’re going to rock it!”
It was only a short message yet had a powerful affect—just the boost I needed. Soon after, a thoughtful gift arrived in the mail, a card and positivity pins ‘Be you’ and ‘Dream big’. It was more than a card; it was thoughtful, like a mirror reflecting how well she knows and understands me.
My week continued to unfold with meaningful encounters—from a rejuvenating walk and talk with a fellow mum to an inspiring chat with a new friend who’s been generously sharing my book. Each of these momenta, a gift of connection, making me feel seen and supported.
My dad always says, ‘The most precious gift is time.’ I’ve come to understand he meant both time, and attention. What makes giving truly special isn’t just the thought put into understanding someone else to give something meaningful, but also the unexpected joy of giving without a special occasion.
Always a precious gift, time with my Dad, photo of wild orchids while together on his milk round in Devon.
The joy of giving
The joy of giving gifts goes beyond just feeling nice; it also has scientific backing. When we receive gifts, our brains release dopamine, a chemical that fills us with happiness. What’s more, giving gifts strengthens our connections with others, thanks to oxytocin, often called the 'love hormone,' which deepens bonds between the giver and the receiver. Plus, feeling grateful for gifts doesn’t just make us feel good; it has real health benefits, making us healthier, less stressed, and happier.
These moments of surprise and delight, all share a common thread of deep connection. They reminded me that sometimes, the most profound gifts are the ones that cost nothing but are rich in thoughtfulness. Like the handmade Aga my dad built for me as a child or the recipe book my mum created. These gifts continue to give, touching our hearts deeply.
A gift of kindness, is a gift that keeps giving. I wanted to share a story.
Tidy Kindness
At 14, life felt too much, overwhelming and complex. Relationships at school and home were tense, reflected in the mess of my bedroom. One afternoon, I came home to find an unexpected calm. My stepmum, instead of urging me to clean my chaotic room as usual, had transformed it for me. The mess had vanished. In its place, order, neatness, new curtains, and a matching bedspread. The room felt different—so did I. Calmer. Happier. More spacious, both physically and mentally. This act of quiet understanding was a gift of peace, one that spoke deeply of being seen and supported. It was a simple act, but its memory forever in my heart.
As I think about what’s the best gift you can give, I’m inspired by this quote.
"The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away." Picasso.
I wanted to leave you with some gift ideas.
Thoughtful gift ideas to share.
From the heart. Write a letter or a poem. Share your emotions boldly.
Simple notes. Sometimes a simple postcard or thank you note can speak volumes.
Captured memories. Bind together photos and keepsakes that tell your shared stories.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Get a special photo (a magic moment) printed or framed.
Truly listen. Give someone your full attention—it's rare and precious.
Made with love. Make something unique and personal, that captures the essence of your bond.
Together time. Discover new places or revisit favourite places together.
Mixtape. Create a playlist that you know they’ll love.
Journal of possibilities. Gift a notebook for their thoughts, dreams, and ideas.
Gift with impact. Sometimes the best gift is the one that says, ‘I get you,’ like the Blackwing pencils I received from a new friend.
What's the most memorable gift you've ever received? I’d love to know.
Thank you for reading. I write to learn, and I hope you learnt something too.
Hope your weekend is as amazing as you.

I've only just found you on here Judy (in all honestly, only just found Substack 🤣) but what you bring to this hidden gem of a platform is something similar to what I hope to bring - especially the word Wonder. My favourite word of all time!
